We posed for a family portrait When you were nine It hung on the walls of your bedroom Until you turned twenty-one It then grew old in a wooden box Along with pictures that we took in Rome It never felt right To hang them on a wall With pictures of school friends, Of city crowds Of ancient girlfriends Of family dogs Of that New Year’s Eve party in 1994 Where we’re playing by the river And climbing trees With friends I can’t remember All with scabby knees Pictures of family secrets I’m glad I’m not involved in I found that portrait two weeks ago I hadn’t seen it in years Were we ever that young? It was that whistling rivalry that made us strong

You promised that after winter You’ll come to pick me up To drive all around Europe Like the old days, dressed in white I’ve noticed by your handwriting That you started drinking again Reminded me of those years Back then it was never too late The spring time breeze The winter haze Green apple pies and stomach aches We slept together for a thousand days In a row The echoes of your letter Don’t get to fill this room There are words that get me better There are words that hurt like hell The spring time breeze The winter haze Green apple pies and stomach aches We slept together for a thousand days In a row Sometimes seems that you forgot… The spring time breeze The winter haze Green apple pies and stomach aches We slept together for a thousand days In a row

Back in the day you were An average chess player But you got to travel Around the world Got to play games with Some famous chess players Then you retired In your home town And you started teaching math At the local school You played chess in the park And made friends with a man that Once conquered the world With his avant-garde art He told you his life was a farce That he dreamt with someone Stealing or destroying his piece of art Early in the morning, that day, Everybody was still sleeping And you kept yourself awake With a newspaper you’d found And you started to think How easy it could be To steal a piece of art And you started to think How easy it could be It’ll be for you, sweetheart

See the raising sun See the frozen lake People getting up to go to work And us going late to bed See the morning stars Buy some fresh baked bread And upon the roof we’ll watch The big parade See streets soaked in rain Hide from those already dead And upon the roof we’ll watch The big parade The big parade The big parade The big parade

Gold Leaf 02:02
I look at the past Through this old glass Made out of gold leaf Made out of gold leaf Made out of gold I hope that one day I’ll see what you said Painted in gold leaf Painted in gold leaf Painted in gold leaf Turned into past
6.
I’d love to see you everyday With your dark sunglasses And your slim cigarettes And your girlish calligraphy I’d love to feel your fingertips With you dark sunglasses You just show your lips And your Hal Blaine’s beat You just show your lips And your Hal Blaine’s beat You just show your lips And your Hal Blaine’s beat You just show your lips And your Hal Blaine’s beat
7.
I’ve got a brand new hairdo Just to persuade myself That life has order and direction And that there’s a place where I’d like to be City’s getting less scary City’s turning upside down Now that I’ve got a brand new hairdo And there’s a place where I’d like to be It’s a long walk back to my place But warmer seasons bring easier walks Now that I’ve got a brand new hairdo There’s a place where I’d like to be

Isabella 02:50
News from Europe made her feel sad By the gate there’s a young man watching the snow fall Soldiers from foreign countries must look like that She gave him some bread and an old blanket and left The seventh sister in the family prayed And promised to God she’d cut her beautiful hair Oh, Isabella Don’t cut your hair Let it grow out, see your sisters Let it grow out just like them Let it grow out The body had been there for three days or so They found it dead near the neighbourhood And people just watched the trees covered in snow That December in 1944 Isabella still had her Self made haircut And saw that her promise turned out to be a curse Oh, Isabella Don’t cut your hair Let it grow out, see your sisters Let it grow out just like them Let it grow out
9.
My bride in black gloves Wants to travel North So she can wear her favourite coat And walk through a city She’s never been before My bride in black gloves Suddenly forgets about the North She rather be lying by the shore See gulls flying Being burned by the sun See ships sailing And waving good bye I will follow you We’ll see some old friends too We’ll cross the meadows We’ll take some pictures on the edge of the world My bride in black gloves What she really wants Is to get up late Have breakfast at midday Complain that the day is over That last night she should’ve stayed sober And I will follow you We’ll walk through a city We’ve never been before
10.
Stop smiling or I’ll have to smile back I don’t want to be the father that lets his own son drawn Too much time on our hands Close your eyes and listen to the echoes of the war You’re invited to be host of the village funeral And on this special day I’ll show you, the dark side of my hands Don’t say a word, Save yourself the effort, there’s life after the storm We’re the kings of tomorrow Your sister supplied us with fake horoscopes I’m not going to tear them into pieces Just because she let me down We’re the kings of tomorrow
11.
A bear hug and a handshake as a last goodbye At the graveyard waits a French priest That he’d never met in life His Buddhist wife decided to wait outside They all said a one word prayer They all said a one word prayer

The night we celebrated New Year’s eve twice We would have done it forever

about

English:

The first thing you hear on Wild Honey’s debut album, “Epic Handshakes And A Bear Hug”, is a “uhuhuuu”, then a voice, then some handclaps… and bit by bit, everything starts to fit in it’s place at the right time: a trumpet and a ukelele, a keyboard, whistles…

To record this album, Guillermo had to move all the furniture in his house, in order to get some space to place microphones, instruments and cables, to have everything handy and out of the way at the same time. All the tracks were recorded there and all the records were put on their sleeves there as well, with the same enthusiasm someone fastens with staples the pages of a fanzine.

The album was mixed in seven days at “Alex The Great”, Brad Jones’ Studio in Nashville. Since day one Brad and Guillermo found some common ground and made a fruitful connection. The result is a beautiful album in which you can recognize his love for music and distant echoes from Brill Building, the Zombies, early Scott Walker, the soundtracks of the Sherman Brothers for Disney, Michel Legrand, Curt Boettcher, bubblegum pop, and all the sentimental and cheerful american music from the first half of the 20th Century to Sufjan Stevens and Jens Lekman. Pop with carefully crafted arrangements that makes every song special in a different way. “Epic Handshakes and a bear hug” is a handful of beautiful songs to discover and cherish.

The album is sold on one only format, a vinyl (180gr red vinyl) that comes with a cd version here:
